The Great Snipe protection in the Upper Narew project comes to an end. Almost all planned actions were implemented and their results are visible in the field and in monitoring reports. Before us the time of settlements and conclusions as well as further work on keeping up the project results. It is also a good moment for presenting what we have managed to achieve, sharing experience and thanking our colleagues, contractors, experts and sponsors.
The Great Snipes from the Upper Narew Valley are already in Africa (our telemetric researches showed that in average the autumn departure starts on 18th August). Young birds leave a little later. For us it is the moment of summing up results of the lekking grounds monitoring in 2016. In this season 7 different lekking grounds, gathering in total from 40 to 61 males, were found in the valley. The result is especially interesting as after extreme drought in the previous year we had expected rather downward trend of the population.
On 21-23 July we visited Turów, a small town with a great history, situated in southern Belarus, upon the Prypiat river. The valley of the Prypiat is an undisputed birdwatching attraction. Vast backwaters, appearing in early spring, gather huge flocks of migrating birds, later on the valley becomes a convenient nesting place for the part of them. Birdwatchers are attracted by Terek Sandpiper and Azure Tit. We were, naturally, the most interested in Great Snipes,
The great snipe season in the Upper Narew River Valley still continues, albeit slowly approaching theend. In a few days we will be giving a summary of the number of lekking sites and males present in the Valley in 2016. Even now I can, however, gladly announce that despite the extreme drought in the previous year (not favourable for the survival of juveniles and adults) we observed an increase in the number of individuals of this rare species. Perhaps this is due to locally favourable hydrological conditions and the increased area of potential habitats for great snipes, created thanks tohabitat restoration efforts forming part of our Project.
On April 26th, we took part in the LIFE Project Information Day. Our director Roman Kalski moderated one of the sessions, entitled "Protecting wetland birds".Our project coordinator EdytaKapowiczgave a presentation of our project. As always, we also had a stand with publications and project gadgets. The LIFE Project Information Day was attended by ca. 250 people.

On 13th February 2016 we visited the Centreof Environmental Education in Ełk with a presentation entitled "Active protection of the great snipe Gallinago media in the Upper Narew River Valley Natura 2000 site". The assembled audience was presented with main assumptions and preliminary results of the project. At the end of the meeting, gathered visitors could see the diaporama by Robert Dróżdż and the film by Tomasz Kłosowski from the series "Dancing with nature". We are grateful to the Bird Lovers Club at the Centreof Environmental Education in Ełk for the invitation and a friendly atmosphere at the meeting.
It’s still winter, February, but we are already preparing our pastures to welcome grazing cows. In the vicinity of Trześcianki 60 hectares of meadows along the river Narew are used for grazing during the seazon. At the moment, repairs of access roads are underway to make it possible for the cows to arrive in a truck directly to the meadows - this is important because ca. 50 individuals will graze in this place.
