The results of the monitoring of the nesting success of the wader birds “Trześcianka”

We also have the results of the monitoring of the nesting success of the wader birds in the plot “Trześcianka” located in the Upper Narew Valley.
The monitoring area included 3 plots (each at least 60 hectares) in the Trześcianka refuge. These areas are meadows on the flood plains of the Narew River and its tributary Rudnia, and are potential breeding habitats for the surveyed wader birds. Plots with different water use and management were selected for monitoring.

  1. Grazed area – research plot A (65 hectares) – to be fenced with an electric fence in the future.
  2. Grazed area with a natural hydrological regime shaped, among other things, by climate change – research plot B (64 ha).
  3. An area of mosaic of hay and grazing land use with a natural hydrological regime shaped, among other things, by climate change – research plot C (69 ha).

Just as the table with nest counts shows – despite the larger area – we have 3x fewer pairs of birds on the Upper Narew than on the smaller location on Gródek. Instead, it can be seen that grazed areas are preferred by birds.
Next year – 2023 – we are starting to make major investments in Trześcianka for better water management and next, an anti-predator fence will be installed on plot A. We will observe how these changes will affect the occurrence of birds.
Our success is the return of the lek of the great snipes, which after an absence of about 10 years were again observed in the DGN, in the area of Trześcianka.
The monitoring was performed and the results compiled by the @Dubelt Naturalist Society
