This is a busy time for both the curlews and us. Pairs have taken up their territories, they are laying eggs, and some are already incubating. We are locating curlew breeding sites and searching for nests. As we do every year, we are reading the numbers on the flags fitted to the birds, mainly those released after head-starting. These readings provide valuable data and reveal the stories of individual birds.
The video shows a female released in the Brzozówka Valley in 2017. Until now, she had never once been recorded in Poland, although she had been observed in Spain every year. This year, she was seen in the very refuge she comes from. Other birds observed include a female recorded in the Omulew Valley but originating from as far away as the Obra River, and another female that nested last year in the Pulwy Marsh and chose the Omulew Valley this year.
We encourage everyone to read the numbers on the flags of any curlews they observe and send the photographs to us. We will be happy to share more fascinating stories about their lives and migrations.
The footage comes from a camera trap installed by Tomek Tumiel as part of active nest protection measures.
