New fords are being constructed in the Upper Narew River Valley

30 wrzesień 2014

Kaniuki_3Seemingly mellow, the lowland river of Narew can often surprise by a sudden rise in the water level, and not necessarily as a result of particularly severe or long-lasting rains. Fortunately, the warm and sunny dawn of the summer this year favored fieldwork. The starting fall didn't bring substantial rainfalls and it allows continuing the running operations. We have already completed the construction of the largest of the investments planned for this year – the ford in the Kaniuki village. At the moment the contractor has moved to Puchły, where it has started the construction of the second largest ford, which should make it possible to cross the Rudnia River safely. For this year, we have also planned commissioning six more similar minor facilities. The fords allow farming vehicles to drive through watercourses and old river beds. This will not only facilitate scything of meadows located in islands formed by innumerable tributaries and old river beds of the Narew River, but first and foremost – collecting and transporting the scythed biomass, which up to now was not possible in many places. Currently existing and traditionally exploited fords did not have a hardened bottom and appropriately designed sag grades, they were also not indicated anyhow in the field. The bottom of the new weirs is hardened with open-work slabs and will not be damaged by vehicle wheels. Gentle sag grades will allow drive access for tractors with trailers and transporting of hay bales.
